Ricky Hatton admitted that after his second round loss to Pacquiao in the year 2009, he contemplated suicide and also flirted with extreme depression and loneliness. His life almost came to a standstill and nothing else mattered apart from his defeat. All he could think was a way to end his life.
Ricky Hatton admitted to BBC sport that he was so down and low after the defeat that he was crying and breaking out. He even thought of committing suicide to end his misery. He sought answers from alcohol and thus further multiplied his problems. He contemplated retiring from the sport but that didn’t work out well for him either.
Many experts believe that the reason behind his shattering loss was that he was mentally not prepared at all for the match. He did not follow the game plan that his coach advocated and instead thought he could fight Pacquiao on instincts and raw strength alone. This is what brought Ricky Hatton down in the second round itself. He went out winging with leaping left handed hooks and tried to slug with Pacquiao who was much faster and agile. Ricky Hatton should have had stuck to his game plan. Even if that wouldn’t ensure his win, it would at least result in Ricky Hatton losing the match with some respect. This would not have shattered him completely as his second round defeat did.
Ricky Hatton did not adapt to the situation of the fight and remained absolute. The main problem was that instead of learning from his defeat and taking back some positive from the fight, he ended up losing all his confidence. He took the defeat to his head and heart and decided to quit his career while he was at the peak of his career. This was perhaps the worst of his mistakes. He lost the fight but it did not stop there. He went on to believe himself into losing everything that he had. He walked away from his glittering career while he was at his peak and even got himself to commit suicide.
